Keeping up with an ever-changing climate can be dizzying and data-heavy—but weather information needs to feel intuitive, accessible, and human. As one of the most trusted sources for forecasts and news in the U.S., The Weather Channel saw an opportunity to evolve their app beyond raw data, placing new emphasis on storytelling, personal wellbeing, and the role weather plays in everyday life.
They came to Instrument to refresh their app’s brand identity, redesign key experiences, and deliver a robust design system to support their long-term goals. Their ambition was threefold: increase engagement by expanding into health and wellness content, attract a younger audience without alienating their loyal base, and strengthen trust by delivering world-class weather storytelling through a modern, human-centered design.

Our design embraced the full spectrum of weather, using live conditions to shape the app’s look and feel. Type, UI, and layout were refined into a modern, sophisticated palette, while color was applied contextually to mirror shifting conditions. Imagery played a more central role, creating depth and immersion, while the system itself remained systematic and adaptable—capable of flexing across screens, scenarios, and stories.

Storytelling &
Wellness
Taking cues from best-in-class editorial apps, we introduced modular layouts for the news landing page and health & wellness tools—giving weather reporting a more journalistic voice while while helping user better understand how weather impacts daily life. A contextual color system tied it all together, allowing editorial modules and wellness content to adapt their look—further immersing users in the story of the weather around them.
